Staying Safe In The Wilderness: Survival Preparation Gear Must-Haves

Posted on: 23 January 2017

You may be thinking about going on a camping adventure in the near future. Before you leave for your trip, you may want to start gathering some survival preparation gear. If you already have this gear, you will be prepared in the event of an emergency that could occur while you are out in the wilderness. For example, if you were to get stuck out in the wilderness because your vehicle would not start, you would have the supplies needed to survive until someone could get to you.

Water and Non-Perishable Food Items

Some of the most important items to bring with you include water bottles and non-perishable food items. If you end up stranded and have to travel to get help for several days at a time, it is important for you to have plenty of water to drink. You can buy bottles of water ahead of time and pack them in your vehicle. Non-perishable food items can come in handy because they do not expire quickly. Some of the best non-perishable foods to bring include peanut butter crackers, granola bars, protein bars, and cereal.

Wool Blankets and Large Pillows

The last thing you want is to get stuck in the wilderness as the temperature outside begins to drop. Whether you have to sleep in your vehicle or a tent, the best way to stay warm is to have plenty of wool blankets and pillows available. While the wool will keep you warm as the temperature gets colder at night, the pillows will provide a bit of comfort so that you can get the extra rest you need before heading off in the morning to find help.

Homemade First-Aid Kit

Anything can happen when you are outdoors, so it is best to be prepared with a first-aid kit. Instead of buying a traditional kit, you can make your own and fill it with must-have items, including gauze, bandages, burn ointment, and pain relievers. Your first-aid kit should include hydrogen peroxide, alcohol rub, and scissors, too. If you end up with a large cut or scrape, you could clean out the wound and cover it until you are able to get to an urgent care facility.

Compass

If you are lost in the wilderness and need to find your way back to a stretch of road where people may be driving in their own vehicles, it is important to have a compass. The compass will help you navigate in the right direction so that you do not end up walking around in circles. When out in the wilderness, it may be hard for you to figure out where you are going because of all the trees and shrubs, so having a compass in your hands at all times can help.

Different situations can occur while out in the wildness and it is better to be prepared with the right survival gear. These are some of the best supplies to bring with you on any camping adventure.
